Description

Fitted blazer/jacket from Burda magazine – 5/2009/102. I found both of the fabrics in a random op shop in the middle of nowhere, for $2. I fused the navy with coat fusing (all pieces) to give it firmness as it was really light, then did extra interfacing on top. Pretty much used the pattern straight as it was, apart from taking in the princess seams a bit to give it a slimmer, more tailored look. So yeah, it was pretty straightforward. I used The Sewing Book by Alison Smith to give me a bit of help with the instructions for the collar, as per usual the Burda magazine instructions are rather brief. First time I’ve made a jacket with all the “bits” – shoulder pads, sleeve caps, full lining; stoked that I know how to do it all now. Photos courtesy of my friend, the very talented Elizabeth Myra who just got a new lens and was keen to try it out. Thanks Liz!

Material Notes

Navy cotton (fused for strength), gingham check poly (not actually a lining fabric per say), brass buttons (not good going through security at the airport!).

Wow! Very impressive – you’ve inspired me to have a go at making a lined jacket. My efforts in the past have ended up as UFOs. With this gorgeous jacket for inspiration I might just persevere and get something I really like out of it. Love the buttons and all the detail.

Awesome! It looks great on you and I love the check pattern fabric for the lining – it’s unexpected and gives the jacket a whole different feel. It sounds like you put a lot of work into this and it shows. Great job and cute outfit!

It looks amazing on you! Great job with the fit. I love the gingham lining, it’s a nice surprise inside, and it looks good with the sleeves rolled up too.

Thanks ! Yeah I’m loving the sleeves rolled up, a bit more casual. I was in Wellington for the day and saw heaps of them in shops :) I actually googled the burda pattern to see the technical drawing and came across a post on your blog with it!

I thought it looked familiar, its the one that’s emerald green isn’t it? It’s amazing what a change in fabric can do to make a jacket look completely different. It’s still on my list, it just has to wait until Winter comes back around.
I had the best time fabric shopping in Welly last month :)
