I loved the Tiered Maxi from 05/2010, the top pattern being my inspiration for my modified version: the top with a single skirt, pleated instead of gathered.
Top is silk twill and has the loveliest hand. Skirt is polyester georgette panel print with flecks of gold throughout, and the under skirt is polyester crepe with stretch. I made the under skirt to come just above the knee, cutting it 12 inches narrower than print and lightly gathered it into the bust seam. It turned out nicely without extra bulk. The shorter lining allows the sheer nature of the panel print to do it’s thing naturally and gives another dimension. I added small darts on the back piece at the center of shoulder blades to get a better fit and hand sewed bra cup inserts between top’s garment and interlining for more comfort.
Many ways to style this: a classic denim jacket, light weight wrap or pashmina for cooler night; wedges, strappy heels, cute flip flops, etc. Jewelry can be simple, even none at all…I’m wearing flat patton rose gold sandals with layers of necklaces, ombre beaded cuff and chunky dinner ring. The clutch is vintage, completely beaded in white and belonged to my grandmother.
