Yes I know the photos are only by the pool, but I don’t know anyone with a boat to do a nice sea-themed photo shoot, so by the pool it is.
This is a very basic dirndl skirt made from an early 1980s heavy cotton (curtain? drapery?) fabric. The print is based on yacht sails, and there’s a few ‘waves’ at the bottom edge. I was very lucky that the piece of fabric had two repeats of the print so I just had to cut it in half, trim the edges slightly so they were the same length, sew the seams, gather the top, and throw on a waistband. Easy Peasy.

Just wonderful….what a great print….I am always looking for border prints from 40s – 80s, and have also purchased curtains on many occasions for repurposing into a dress as getting enough fabric to construct a 50s dress or even a 50s full skirt is becoming more difficult to find here in Australia (even on etsy!!). Congrats on your skirt, I will copy and paste to my “design” folder as an inspiration. Isn’t it great what we can achieve when we think “outside the square”. PS.. I am also nearly to the point of screenprinting my own fabric to get the desired border prints. GREAT WORK pambox!!

Wow, thank you so much, Mary! I really was lucky to find this piece of fabric, you’re right, it’s hard to find border prints and panels here. I don’t think I’m bold enough to screen print my own fabric yet, though – but I might have some fun experimenting with fabric paint this summer.

Perfect use of fabric. Also really good job with the gathers, it’s super even and fancy!

Thank you! The gathering was done by hand because the fabric is quite wide and heavy, so I didn’t trust my machine to do a good enough job. I did two rows of hand gathering, and each stitch was about 1/2cm wide.
