Technically this is JenniferElizabeth’s creation, but she hit a wall as to how to attach the fur, and she doesn’t have an overlocker (serger) and I do so she came round for some big sister help, and then we took the photos with my camera. She was hired to make this suit for a friend-of-a-friend who plays Santa at various shopping centres. We had equal parts fun and frustration with this- and days later there are still drifts of ambient fur-offcuts wafting throughout my house, confusing our cat- but I think the suit turned out fantastically well!
Velvet, funfur.

Thanks Jennifer, those links were very helpful. So far I have purchased and downloaded the two mens jacket patterns and the trousers. Perhaps I can make a suit out of them later in the season. For now I think I will have to look seriously at the Kwik Sew pattern or perhaps the Mc Calls pattern: http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5550.htm plus I have just been given a link to a Simplicity pattern, http://www.simplicity.com./p-3045-adult-costumes.aspx so I need to make some decisions and see what I can get here in Adelaide or else sent to me. Santa always starts early in Adelaide as he “arrives” in the city with our annual Pageant on 14th November. That doesn’t really give me all that long to be researching before I have to be moving into the making mode. I appreciate all the help.

I would love to find out more about this great suit. I am a professional Santa and just about to start making my third suit, this time the jacket will be of what Spotlight calls a ‘Ballroom velvet’. I am looking for a good supplier of fur of the length that you have used. Spotlight don’t carry it any more at that length. I am also looking for a pattern as I have misplaced my Butterick pattern of several years ago.

Hi Santa! thanks for getting in touch. I must say that after making this suit, I never want to make another – it was so tough! The fur was given to me by a friend so sadly i don’t have the name of the supplier although I found something like it here – http://clegs.clegs.com.au/index2.htm . It looks long and about the right price for a good quality fake fur. maybe get them to send you a sample? I used velvet for my suit also and i think that it looks lovely. Mostly i made up the patterns as I went along – very basic wide leg pants with an elastic waistband and a very simple “jacket” that I put a semi circular cape on and trimmed with fur as well. “McCalls” makes a santa suit pattern #8992 and Kwik sew make this one http://www.kwiksew.com/Catalog/cat_detail.cfm?pid=3649&QL=CostumesSpecial
Hope this helps? Happy to answer any further questions Santa!
