I found this great static-looking fabric on Etsy, and had to make a dress with it! This is the first dress I’ve made without a pattern. I used a dress form to start with, and then tried it on a BUNCH of times to get the fit right.
And yes, it has pockets! :)

you’re sewing is truly fantastic! Love, love, love this dress…very well tailored and impressive you didn’t use a pattern! You have wonderful natural talent and should upgrade your status to Intermediate!

The dress looks great and the fabric is beautiful!!! I have a skirt (RTW) made out of similar fabric and I love it, but your dress is almost making me think of re-making the skirt into a dress… Hmmmm, I wonder…. ;-)

To get the fit on the pencil skirt, I just tried on the dress before I sewed the side seams and added pins all the way down my side so I knew exactly where to sew to make it fit right!
For the pockets, I’d recommend looking at a pattern. I know, you said you didn’t need a pattern, but I think seeing how it was done on another dress will help you figure out what shapes to cut out for your dress. I looked at the Heidi pattern and instructions (http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/heidi) and used that to figure out how to make the pockets on this dress.

Those “bunch” of times paid off – the first thing that really caught my eye about this dress was the fantastic fit. Well done! Plus the pockets. I love pockets and these ones rock!

It is adorable. I like the fabric and the pockets really add a nice touch. Did you use a zipper for closure? On the left side or on the back?

No zipper – it’s a stretchy fabric, so it slips right on!
I wish I had done a zig-zag stitch on the middle band though, so it would stretch better. That’s something that just slipped my mind when I was sewing it.
