I made this slouchy top using the Batwing Top pattern as a base. I used the maximum size even though I normally wear an XS-S. I’m glad I went larger because this top is extremely loose and comfortable. I scoured the downtown LA fabric district and found this heathered, stripey knit for a great price. Instead of doing the mitred V on the neckline, I cut the neckband longer, knotted the remnants and let it hang. All of the hems and seams were meticulously pressed as I went along to prevent the finished garment from looking too rumpled. This is my first Burda project and I am so excited to join the community! Looking forward to trying more of the patterns.
I’m pleased with the outcome of this project because it is, most importantly, wearable. I wore it out the night of to dinner with a friend and it was a hit. That friend dubbed it the Sailor Top & the name stuck :)

Thank you! :) I am the exact opposite, whenever I see a loosely shaped anything – immediately drawn to it. haha

what a beautiful top! I think the way you did the stripes makes it a standout top.

AAH! I love ML Loft! Haven’t been there for a while though. You are brave to try jeans! I’m scared to make pants because it’s such a crap shoot with fitting. Have you checked out any of the little no name shops near Michael Levine on Maple? Takes lots of digging but lots of treasures to be found. There is also an awesome trim store on Wall & 9th..

aren’t we SO LUCKY to live in l.a. and have access to the downtown garment district fabric shops?? it’s mostly cheaper than any retail or even online store. only downside is you have to sometimes scour through a TON of crap to find a gem. your top has inspired me to do something with some blue stripey stuff of my own. welcome to burda!!

hi momo! YES. I am in love with the garment district. It is one of the main reasons I don’t think I could ever leave LA! Some of the fabric is only $1/yard! That is ridiculous!
Thanks for your comment :) I’m inspired by everyone here and love that this kind of community exists. I’ve been a long time lurker but am slowly crawling out from my cave. Can’t wait to see what you make with your stripey fabric!
