I used a navy blue stretch sateen bottom-weight fabric for the body and white cotton broadcloth for the tie. The collar is embellished with white grosgrain ribbon. I added a thin belt because, frankly, my inanimate model is not very sexy/curvy. A 22" coordinating zipper is in the back. The collar is a v-neck which has several snaps on the underside, attaching to the collar.
The detachable collar is such a great idea as, without the sailor collar, this dress would be perfect for office attire, paired with a blazer, cardigan or shrug. You can be a sailor or your own time!
I used Simplicity pattern #9236 that I used is not a bad pattern, overall. It is however, dated. Not that the sailor dress isn’t but, 1970’s was not the style I was angling for. Thus, I made small modifications to the tie; pointed at the ends instead of squared off. In round two, I suspect I will make a bandana size tie, forgoing this longer one altogether. It just doesn’t fit in the “program”.
