Description
Here is our perfect basic knit tank. We are in the middle of a wicked heat wave here in Brooklyn, and these pictures of this lovely tank top make the weather just a wee bit more bearable! So, BurdaStylers, rev up your machines and get cracking on your new summer staple. We gave a few different options for you to choose from in the pattern: “A” is the basic option (shown here), “B” is with a cowl neck, and “C” is a sweet summer dress (see our other finished project linked from this page). Have fun!

This design looks great, not only for the 3 mentioned items, but a vest also comes to mind! Too bad, I just made my own pattern for one, could have saved me the work, LOL… This really looks great for a vest, would just make it a bit shorter and give it a" ribbing" edge at the bottom. What I did for my vest, was to use the same knit fabric (a light sweater thermal knit with a mix-in of some shiny threads that I had lying around, probably close to 100% cotton since a dye-test using food coloring gave color on both types of threads, the shiny took a bit less dye though, giving a cool effect. Since it’s white, I’ll probably dye it soon). I gave the neck- and sleeve openings a folded 1" edging, the bottom got double that. Well, “I’m giving” would be more correct, as I cut it all, but haven’t tossed it together yet (only trials on scrap pieces to see that the fabric would work for edges too etc.). The reason for the delay in the process, is that my new dress form arrived, and I have been busy padding and covering it, quite a job, but now it looks awesome and much more natural! Plus, it’s now properly pinnable, something it wasn’t (it’s a Dritz Sew Simple, got it for $58 on eBay).

I made this top with a straight sewing machine and it worked just fine. I always double sew seams when it calls for a serger….it works out great!!!!!

Perhaps it has been a little while since we had a fresh, free pattern. On the bright side, this pattern is actually 3 patterns in one! That’s a great value, for free.

Brilliant timing! I just made a singlet top from another site which I ended up chopping up to recycle- It was revolting! I’ve already started making this – with a bound neckline and armholes. Thankyou! I should have a new, and great fitting, top tomorrow. Please, keep the basics coming!

Umm ok, I don’t want to be mean, and of course what you do is amazing, but I think it has been a while since a real and free pattern… All the free patterns lately have been alterations of other ones I think.. :/

I downloaded the pattern last night and then read about the overlock machine and the double needle needed for the hem in order for it to stretch!! I don’t have either, could I just sew the hem using a zig zig stitch?

This is great! Ironically, despite being Down Under and the middle of winter, for me this is the PERFECT pattern to have come out right now… I want to make a vest to wear over work shirts to keep me warm! I had a pattern for one but the armholes of it are all wrong. This one looks better so I will give it a try!
