THE PROJECT: LAYERED RUFFLED TUBE TOP
What you’ll need:
-12 inches of ½” Elastic
– ½ yard of Pink Chiffon
-½ yard Magenta Cotton
-½ yard of Brown Checked Chiffon
MAKE THE SHORTS:
STEP 1: Cut two rectangles (one for the front of the shirt, one for the back) from the pink chiffon to create a basic tube top.
STEP 2: From the magenta cotton and brown checked chiffon, cut five strips of fabric for your ruffles. Each strip should be twice the length of your tube top and two-to-three inches wide. Sew a line of baste stitches to create ruching, then pull the bobbin thread to enhance the gathering.
STEP 3: Place and pin one of the ruffles along the top of the shirt. Secure it with a straight stitch, then alternate ruffle fabrics.
STEP 4: Sew a small casing at the top of your second tube top piece. Attach a safety pin to one end of your elastic and run it through the casing. Stitch both ends to secure elastic.
STEP 5: Place the elastic piece on the ruffled piece with right sides together. Sew the sides up and finish off the raw edges.
STEP 6: Hem the bottom of the shirt, use your scraps to make a decorative bow, and you’re done!
