I wanted a very simple, loosely fitted dress to show case this kind of crazy print/ruffled material; I thought a modern 20s-style dress would be great for a night out in London—with some high, high heels!
This pattern (McCalls 6287) runs very loose, and even though I wanted a body skimming dress, I still had to take up the side seams almost an inch (I’m between a sz 4-6 in the big 4 patterns). Other than that, it was FAST. I added a 1/4" hem at the neckline and armscyes because the ruffles didn’t lay smoothly when left raw (which is what the pattern called for). I did leave hem raw—cut slight under the bottom ruffle—and didn’t do the detailing the pattern called for at the bottom.
Because it was a thin synthetic, the fabric wasn’t great to work with. I had to pin every ruffled down before sewing to ensure they laid the right way, and even that didn’t work great for the boat neckline. It also snagged if you looked at it wrong (um, an older lady bumped into me at the theatre, and her giant emerald ring got stuck on a ruffle!).
This dress is also cute belted at the high waist, but I was trying to hide my growing baby bump in these pictures (showcased in the last shot). This was sewn right when I found out I was pregnant and will be my last dress with no maternity modifications for a while!

I love how the dress is simple yet detailed if that makes any sense. It’s just really cool to look at. Nice work!
