Burda Style For people who sew

3/2011 Ruched Front Evening Dress #110 made in silk jersey. This was a really fun and easy dress to make. I cut a size 36 and took the side seams in quite a bit until the ruching looked right. This required quite a bit more to be taken in right under the bust and through the rib cage. Since my fabric was jersey, I omitted the zipper and that seems to be no problem.Other adjustments I made were to raise the v-neck 2 inches, remove the shoulder ruching on the back pieces, and raised the waist one inch. The patterns calls for the lining to be constructed just like the fashion fabric, including all that ruching. I would have much preferred to be provided with a separate lining pattern that did not require all that bulk. I left off the lining and finished the neck and arm openings with steam-A-seam Lite 2…..my first time using that and it turned out great. I turned the hem up and finished with a twin needle.
Working with knits is pretty new to me and I found that all the seams behaved really well if I pressed them flat on both sides before pressing open.
I absolutely love this dress in a knit and plan to make a couple more versions.

I disregarded this dress when i saw it because of the fabric. since then though i look at the line drawings first. this is gorgeous. guess whos making one now lol. as for lining i think its a pain to recreate lining excatly like the outer?? Its like making two dresses and only usefull if you.re reversing the dress (i do this) i have two folders one with all sleeves traced out in case i don’t like a dress pattern sleeve and one with basic front and backs . v neck boat neck round neck etc and these i use for lining. its just your basic shift dress modified to suit the dress i.m working on its quick and effective xx

Yes, I had to look past that shiny fabric as well. To me this is not an evening dress at all :-) I think I will try and draft a lining for the front (or find a good match) for my next go at it. I look forward to seeing your version of this! I might also experiment some with using elastic for the ruching…

Lovely dress, good fabric choice and really flattering. Mind you, it helps to have a great figure (which you do).

Thank you! I was definitely drawn to this because of the ruching….great for hiding imperfections. :-) I am going to make this dress for my Mom and add sleeves.
