Riding Pants

Upstate, South C...

I’ve always thought riding pants looked really cool, not that I know anything about them or riding horses. I like the seaming, the patches and the slim fit. I started with a basic legging pattern, McCalls 6173, and chopped it up in to pieces to fake the same look. I sewed all the pieces back together again and top stitched with bright blue thread. The blue “patch” pieces are corduroy, the rest of the pants are made of a brown double knit. Probably not the best choice since it wrinkles and sags a bit. I’m pleased with how they turned out anyway. I even made it through my first mock fly front (almost) painlessly.

I’m so glad I found this, I’m a horserider and I have been looking for a jodhpurs pattern everywhere. Such a great idea and looks really good too! Did you make it with the zip detail?

I was rather surprised when I read the start of your blog. I’m an Aussie and I have never used “pants” to refer to underwear nor have I ever heard used before. Undies, dacks, knickers, jocks but not pants unless the word “under” is in front. Where ever you heard it, I’d say it’s probably a hangover from the 50’s/60’s or earlier. Love the name of your state dance by the way ;D

I’m sure I’m totally wrong. I guess “pants” as undies is just a UK thing. I’m not sure why I thought Aussies thought the same. I probably confused myself because I knew you’d think our state dance was funny ;)

I’m not sure if these leggings would actually work as real deal riding pants, but I thought they worked well as “in-the-spirit-of-riding-pants.” I did not do the zipper detail on the sides, mainly because I didn’t have the zippers. I’ve worn them many times already. Thanks so much!

Thank you! I’m not a huge fan of leggings but these are fun to wear.
