This skirt uses the pattern from the Beaded Applique swing skirt from the Alabama stitch book, but I loved the reverse applique beaded technique shown in the photo of the dress on p. 169 in the Alabama Stitch book, so I used that technique instead of the normal beaded applique technique. I’m entering this for the Alabama Studio Style contest.
The top layer is a gray cotton knit, and the bottom layer is a red merino knit. Since I live in New Zealand, it seemed like a merino knit made in NZ would be appropriate.

The close up photo really shows up the beading to it’s best,. Do the beads framing the applique " hide " the running stitch ?? I am very keen to give this technique another try — it is years since I did this, but I like the modern twist.

The stitches are actually run through the beads that frame the applique (so they are part of the stitching). They are bugle beads with a hole through the middle (longways) that you can put your needle and thread through. I think the Alabama Stitch book has more information on using these, as well.

I’m a big fan of her books too but I don’t think I can make anything like this. You’re so good at this.

thanks y’all for your really nice comments on this, I’m glad you like it! I’ve never actually posted any of my projects here before, so it is really cool to get such great feedback! Good luck on your Alabama studio style projects for those of you entering. I’m excited to see what other people are doing for that.

Beautiful, I love how you combined cotton and wool. The beadwork is amazing.

gorgeous! that color combo rocks, and the beads are simply divine!!!
does the red lining go all the way up the inside or did you cut it away partially? can you photo the inside of the skirt?

I’m glad you like it. The red lining does go all the way up inside, so the whole skirt is two layers of fabric (except where it is cut away for the reverse applique). I’ll try to remember to photograph the inside…I’ve been having trouble downloading pics from my cameral lately.

I am a big Alabama Stitch fan. I LOVE your skirt, it is gorgeous. Have you been to their website to see how many hundreds of dollars this skirt would cost had you purchased it from them? I have done 3 t-shirts and purchased the indigo fabric from Alabama Stitch but have not started it yet, now I really want to, yours is great!
