My somewhat guilty pleasure in making my own bikinis, started off many years ago when I found this second hand swimsuit from Triumph, very typical 70ies looking but in a mint condition. Once it must have fitted a lady with a generous bust why I easily could make it last for pattern pieces my size. I guess I was more challenged by the “make over” idea than the very result. But that bikini actually served me a couple of summers and always generated compliments and wows.
This one is another labour of love in that sense it took me over 2 seasons to finalise it. I first found the lycra fabric at a tradeshow in November 2011. It was new, had a vintage feel to it and sold by meter which I find very rare. Once I embarked on the bikini design (free hand) the following spring, I immediately got a picture of the elastic band to combine it with. And you know what’s it like – sometimes you just can’t let go from a particular idea. So I started to hunt that elastic band down. Eventually, from looking around the globe another 5 months, Kleins Haberdashery in Soho could offer exactly what I had in mind. That was in September last year. And hear we are!
