How much trouble hasn’t this dress given me? It nearly made me loose the belief in commercial patterns, it made me realise that I’m quite a slipshod (because I can’t be bothered to read instructions and sew-as-I-go) and even though I got my costume designer friend and fit guru to help me out, I nearly gave up. The celebration of a good friend’s 30th birthday was in the end what trigged me to finish this. And I have to admit that I’m quite pleased with the result.
When I cut the pattern, I shortened the back piece about one inch, but still it seems to crawl a little up the back. The front darts are a little bit too high for my natural bust point, but the curve looks OK. I like the flaps on the front piece, but I had to fasten them to the front piece to make them look nice. I don’t know what the instruction says about this…
I’d love to make a version of the original V8280 wiggle dress, but I know I’d have to do some serious tissue/muslin fitting, so I might just alter my basic block instead…

wow !!! I already saw this dress, V8280 yesterday at PatternReview.com. Have to sew a dress for a friends 40th birthday and I want to make this pattern… now more than ever!!! :-) (Nevertheless I am really not sure whether I might be able to make a perfect fit.)

It’s a gorgeous pattern, and the neckline is very flattering. I don’t think it will be that difficult to get the perfect fit, especially since the zipper goes in the back, and you’ve got several darts and side seams to work with. My biggest problem was mainly that I’m not used to do sway-back adjustments, and the fabric didn’t tackle unpicking that well. Oh, and I changed the skirt from the fitted wiggle skirt to a 3/4 skirt!

Love the dress, it’s absolutely gorgeous! Fantastic colour as well! I know what you mean about the V8280 pattern, I made the wiggle dress version in black and had to make a LOT of alterations to make it fit right too, the whole process was pretty frustrating. The result was lovely, but made me think it would have been easier to draft my own pattern from scratch. Other Vogue patterns I’ve used have been pretty good fits though, so I don’t know if it’s just this one…

That’s true! It really felt good, and also knowing that the decision on going for the 3/4 skirt was the right one to relieve me from all the trouble and end up with triumph! Great feeling!
