Simplicity 4070 in red taffeta with black lace overlay
I liked the look of the view on the cover with the red and black, but I didn’t like how the dress itself was the strapless view, but the overlay had the straps. Nothing really wrong with it, but it’s just not quite my thing. So I just cut out both bodice pieces from the A view and drafted my own facings (with the help of my mom :) ). To hem the red fabric, I just folded it up, pressed it, and machine stitched around. But I hemmed the lace by just trimming it to the right length and going around the very edge with a zigzag stitch. It sorta gathered the edge of the fabric up on itself a little bit (idk if that’s cuz of the tension or what) which makes a nice finished edge. All the seams of the skirt are french seams, and the seams of the bodice are bound with seam binding, so no raw edges.

Thank you so much! I’ve only been sewing for a few years, but I’m having so much fun with it :) And formal dresses are so expensive and never fit me right, but I need things to wear to plays and operas and the like at college, so I just make my own!
