Description

This was going to be my entry for the mini-challenge, but life got in the way. Oh well. Anyway, this was using a leather trenchcoat that my mom (who happens to share a name with the pattern ;) was getting rid of, and a dress that somehow was leftover from my high school years. The shoulder strap was using the trenchcoat belt, and the buckles in the front are from the straps around the sleeve cuffs. The body of the bag is cut from the back of the coat, and the lining (pieced together with the skirt part on top and the top part on bottom) is the dress.

Incidentally, does anyone have any tips for topstitching on leather? I did use a leather needle, and heavy-duty thread, but my machine was NOT happy with this one! And I still have half a coat to use up!

Material Notes

leather, cotton

I’m working on a leather bag now too…and was also having trouble with stiching. Someone told me to fiddle with the tension until it’s right or to just double thread your needle. Hope this helps!

I think you have done a great job. I love it. A bag I would use. I’m interested in sewing with leather too… but I’m a bit scared!

This looks very nice! And very functional! I’d never guess it was made from an old trenchcoat-that’s an ingenious way to reuse one!
