This dress used to belong to my grandmother and obviously looked like a proper granny dress to begin with. I think the dress was originally made in 70s by my great grandmother. I altered it by taking the collar off and changing it into a button-down dress. I also shortened it quite a bit. I kept the pockets as they were originally because I really fell in love with them. It is one of the few dresses I managed to save from my grandmother’s wardrobe, before her house burned down with everything in it. It still reminds me of her now, when she is not around anymore.

This looks great! That’s awesome that you could update a family hand-me-down into something more contemporary. I really really love this fabric.

The update is good…what about adding a Peter pan collar and maybe some matching trim at the pockets to bring out the belt? I’d like to see a before pic too!

What a lovely thing to do! You saved a piece of her and it can be with you anytime! Nice to see we can use our hobby to such wonderful projects too! :) (I like to think that my grandma is really proud of the way I can sew now, because she showed it to me when I was little…)

Unfortunately I don’t have a “before” picture. I made the dress quite a while ago, before I even started to take pictures of my creations.
