Attempt to copy a Gunne Sax 2 dress w/o a pattern & 1,000 miles from the recipient who lives in KY. Dress had fit & feel of a kid glove, with gathered front center panel…actually, worth every penny for store bought!!!!
Before I left KY for RI, I traced around outer edges of original dress which has gentle hourglass curves.
Fabric was remnant Raven had from a favorite school project about India-really pretty shade.
I did not know how to evenly gather this slippery material, so decided to attach narrow elastic as I joined the 3 front panels. It seemed to work & left a scalloped edge at hemline. Darts were placed on each side of zipper in center back.
I made shoulder straps with encased elastic to be certain they would stay in place. It seemed upper edge was skimpy, so I added another strip of elastic encased in fabric around top edge. The original had a huge bow in center, but, I had no luck recreating that detail.
This project began the end of June after trip to Kentucky. Returning to visit a week ago-I was able to present the attempt to Raven. Left a nor’easter at home to find it 29 degrees here in the a.m. & Halloween festivities in motion, time passage evident. Party dress is w/o season, or so I am saying!
Idea was to let a thirteen year old know that the sewing machine I keep at her home might someday be fun to use.
Photos taken by Raven’s friend, Abbi. The reverse side of dress has typical sheath fit. It worked, so I am keeping the drafted pattern for reference.
Having a perfect model certainly makes all seem better.. Now, that IS lucky for me!
Rayon, polyester mix remnant. Zipper, elastic, thread.

I am anxious for her response to seeing your Summer Tree Skirt & Cherry Crop Top! That may help ease the bumpy start! Prettier than store bought!

Exactly what I meant about thinking I need a month to accomplish making something.
My 2012 resolution is: “Be as productive as Becia!”

Thank you. Last night Raven asked if we could get machine out to make a tee shirt…so mission accomplished.
