I made this purple Mermaid costume for Halloween 4 years ago. It’s mostly hand sewn as my machine wouldn’t sew through the plastic disks on the tail. This is the very first project I ever finished (and then I lost interest in sewing for another year!). It was great fun to wear. It took 20 hours to make. This costume is my own design, I did not use any pattern for this.
American knit, lame, elastic, purple thread, shells from an old chain, ribbons, pearls and a flower lei from Hawaii.

Hello. I cut the shape out on newspaper first. Then I cut 4 pieces of the purple lame and 2 pieces of the padding to that shape. I sewd the the lame pieces together with the right sides together and turned them the right side out. I stuffed them with the padding. I hand sewd the opening at the top and sewd squiggly lines up through the tail with my sewing machine. I attached them to the front and back of the tail by hand.
