I bought this psychedelic muumuu this summer at the wonderful vintage boutique Mad Hatter in Bellingham, Washington State (see the before images). They had just received two delightful ‘60s dresses on consignement; I snagged the other one too and the photos of that remake will follow. I didn’t want to waste this wonderful vintage find, so I thought about it for a while before cutting into it…..
Those sleeves….those sleeves!…..I tried to rework them, but in the end they were so vile they had to go. Since I had cut off so much of the length, there was plenty of fabric to draft new raglan sleeves and neck facings. (I had tried self-bias for the neck, but it just wasn’t looking right.) I also took in the sides by about 7cm, but I still wanted to leave it a bit loose for a period appropriate shift dress.
I’m not sure about how to style this, since it is so loud: Tights or bare legs? Boots or shoes? I’m on the lookout for go-go style boots, but haven’t found the right ones yet. I feel like Rhoda Morgenstern in this dress!
Unknown synthetic: Perhaps a polyester, but it does have a soft touch.
