This spacesuit was created for a new independent short film called Prospect and features a hand dyed ripstop nylon, an invisible zipper in the back and two exposed zippers in the front/around the waist, and lots and lots of bias binding tape!
Areas were selectively ruched and gathered to allow for a fuller range of motion, including the lower arms, lower legs and around the side of the hips. This also let me create the leaner line the directors wanted, yet the actress could still move!
The zippers were the hardest part of this project – each one of the exposed zippers took 2+ hours to install. I don’t the technical way for installing them, but I approached them the same way I made the cut out in my 1950’s dress: sew down a bias cut facing, cut through all the layers, turn the facing under, press, and then topstitch the zippers in place. Maybe there is an easier way, but that got the job done!
All of the binding tape is topstitched twice, I managed to go through an entire spool of thread – I almost ran out in the end! The suit is usually tucked into boots and slipped over gloves and a helmet, check out my blog for more pictures and stills from the test footage taken in the Hoh rainforest!
also! This film is sourcing funding through kickstarter right now, so if you like what you see, ‘click here’:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zeekearl/prospect-a-handmade-sci-fi-short?ref=home_location to support them!
