This is what I am planning on making for my prom dress. I want to use a corset pattern for the top using a christmas red satin I already have. The bottom is layers of chiffon in the same color, each piece will be finished with a baby hem stitch. Also I might want to move the skirt portion up, remove some of the layers from the bottom, and add a black satin belt but im still thinking about that part. Tell me what you think! I know this is a lot of work but I really think I can do it. Plus, I have three wonderful sewers who could help me if I need it.
I’m still a beginner so feedback, critique, and advice is highly appreciated!

yes get a rolled hem foot! i have tried too many times to make things with out it, and now that i have got it, i has made my life so much easier. and i like the idea someone mentioned of mixing chiffon and tulle just so it has more volume and some texture. i wouldnt go for a black belt but thats just me :). good luck and can’t wait to see it!

My biggest suggestion, rolled hem foot. With that much hemming, you’ll definitely want it. It’ll make your life SO MUCH BETTER! Also, if you want to play with texture, maybe mix chiffon and tulle for the layers? This may also give you some of that “fluff” your sketch suggests.

I really like that idea, I think I’ll actually try that.

So far, it looks great! I agree with everyone else, though – the black belt probably won’t be necessary. Also, as you mentioned it, I think that moving the skirt up might be a great idea. Skirts that sit on the natural waistline are always very flattering.

I like the sketch a lot. Red is a bold color, but I don’t think you’ll need the skinny black belt. And the layers at the skirt WILL be a lot of work. Go for it!!! :-)
