Burda Style For people who sew

A while ago I saw a great tunic dress by Harvey Faircloth that had super deep pleats on the back, and totally fell in love with the idea. I’m both short and curvy, so I wanted something similar but better suited to my proportions. And, I have a wedding coming up that I’m headed to, so I wanted something light and summery and pretty — but suitably fancy.

The pattern is my own, which I made from the bodice sloper posted on this site (http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/bodice-sloper-block-32-46). Originally, I’d intended for it to be sleeveless, but the cap sleeves are a bit of a happy accident: I had made insets for the arm holes to finish them off, and had run a zigzag stitch around the edges of the fabric to bind it. As I kept taking the garment on and off during fitting, these would pop out, since I hadn’t tacked them down. I realized that I liked the rough, unfinished fluttery feel of the accidental sleeve caps, and decided to keep them!

All in all, I’m very pleased how this turned out!

Material Notes

The fabric is a lovely silk-cotton (pretty sure it’s called Radiance). I ran it through the washing machine on a gentle cycle before I began work, and it’s held up really, really well. Very easy to sew, no lining was necessary.
