preppy plaid tote

Added Jun 16, 2011

by kaitw

Brooklyn, New Yo...

I used a heavyweight cotton plaid to build this tote bag. It’s lined with a navy and white cotton polka dot fabric and it has a large inner pocket. The bag fastens with a magnetic closure and it has rope straps that are woven through grommets.

The tote stands easily on its own because I used some very stiff interfacing.

Material Notes

cotton, rope, metal grommets

Garment Type
Beach, Casual, Preppy

I’m not normally a “tote” kind of guy, but I LOVE this!

Love this bag!!! What type of interfacing did you use? The kind I am using that is heavy weight makes the fabric wrinkle too badly. You did a wonderful job lining up your plaid, great job! Happy Sewing!

      Thanks for the feedback!

The interfacing that I used was really stiff and it had an iron-on adhesive side (I didn’t realize this until I got it home and started to use it.) So I ended up adhering it to the two plaid panels that created the outer shell before I sewed them together. I’ll try to find out what the interfacing is called and I’ll let you know…

Thank you, I am very interested in finding out what it is as I have been using quilt batting for my bags and want to use something that gives it more weight and structure.

This is an extremely original take on the tote. Very neat!
