Burda Style For people who sew
Description
Some of our favorite patterns from the past have gotten a makeover and have been customized for the BurdaStyle team. To begin with, today’s coat variation was created for myself (alisondahl), and is based off of our Nadine jacket. I love the Nadine jacket but the length wasn’t quite working for my me and the gathers seemed bulky for Spring. I wanted something I could wear over a dress to events that would cover up my limbs but remain light enough for warmer evenings.
From the Nadine pattern I eliminated a number of elements: The high waist seam, the front and back yokes, the front and back gathers, and the ruffles at the hem and sleeves. To make this variation there is some pattern drafting involved: You want to shave away a bit of width from the front and back pieces where gathers are marked (the original pattern has extra width added for these gathers) where the yoke gets attached. Make these sections the same width as the yoke and align. Trace a new pattern piece without including the yoke seams. Add a center back seam instead of cutting on the fold. This will help to achieve a nice fit.
Lengthening the coat to your desired fall is easy; just trace the pattern and from the waistline continue a line down to your desired length (you can really bell this shape out for a 60s mod flair). Length was also added to the sleeves, I wanted a 3/4 look. Also I added pockets (see tutorial below) as now there is room for them on the sides seams.
The collar remains the same a-symmetric shape. I spaced out the buttons more and made larger, covered buttons more suited for a long coat. I found this amazing polka dot silk at B&J Fabrics in Manhattan, it reminds me of Marni or Mui Mui… The lining is tan silk de chine.
The model is wearing BurdaStyle’s Lesley Circle Skirt. Top and shoes the stylist’s own.

I love this restyle so much and with winter finally here in Canberra I had a momentary panic when I read the steps for re-styling the Nadine pattern. I am not the biggest fan of drafting and couldn’t imagine not making this version of the jacket. But then I remembered that the plus size version of Nadine had already been streamlined and my day was made! Thankyou for making this – it is great one hundred times over!

This is a great restyle… It feels much different than the original, even though the pattern modifications are not too complicated. I have this pattern (although I still haven’t made anything from it!), so I’ll keep this in mind for future use. And, I LOVE the buttons! Why has it never occurred to me to make polka dot buttons before?

I absolutely love this redesign. The original is a bit over the top for my tastes. This is much more classic and flattering.
I have a question about the fabric though – what type of silk is this? it looks like the perfect weight for this coat. Personally, I always find fabric choice to be the hardest part – so many options! At the moment, I’m trying to figure out a fabric to make the Alden pattern. Any worries about this in the rain? I always thought silk + rain was no good combination. Love to hear your thoughts as I’m trying to figure out my options for a rain friendly but breathable fabric

It feels like a raw silk, I bought it at B&J Fabrics in Manhattan. They have a website for online ordering but I can’t see this fabric listed. If you emailed them with a picture of the fabric I am sure they’d track it down for you.

Alison, I was wondering: the model in the picture keeps her neck warm with her blouse. How about you? How does the coat look when worn with a scarf? How do you drape the scarf then?
I think your coat is gorgeous, I’m inspired indeed! I’ve been in love with the Tikva for a while (the hem!), but I’m not sure if the pointy lapels would suit me. I like the idea of this collar more, but pairing it with a gathered hem like the Tikva might be too much, maybe…

I wore this coat the other night, see how I styled it with a tank dress here. I would wrap a thin silk scarf around my neck and knot it if I wanted to be warm, but I really designed it to be a Spring/Summer coat, to wear without a scarf.
I think the Tikva trench with a less generous collar would be adorable, like a Peter Pan collar maybe, to soften it a bit… Let me know what you do!

I’ll let you know if I ever come around to it, but since I’m leaving for NYC in August there won’t be a lot of sewing for a year :) I’ll try knitting instead ;)

Its cute, but i wouldn’t design any thing like it, because the length and print together kind of make you look a little bit too old (if you are my age). I think for the person wearing it in the picture it is probably perfect.

That collar is much more practicable on a coat than on the original garment. I do agree with Bambini, though, plus the way the Burda magazines patterns are published (one full project page at a time, it feels) feels like spam.

I like this version much more than the original. I don’t mind re-styles because of examples like this were the new version is remarkably different from the original. Nice job Alison! I like your choice of fabric and the way you streamlined the design… it’s very chic.

Uh, it’s cute.. but the last half a dozen burda mondays have been re-styles. Has Burdastyle stopped producing their own patterns in favour of hosting burda mag patterns? I really hope not, because as nice as burda mag patterns are, they are no where near as edgy, young and interesting as the ones put out by you lovely people.

Ami, No, we have not stopped producing our own pieces to support burda style magazine. We have amassed quite a lot of patterns over the last few years, and many of them are ideal templates for beautiful projects & variations like this one. Remember, we’re pattern makers first and foremost- we want you to use our patterns over and over again, be inspired to make variations off of them for yourselves. That’s why we look to our past designs- and offer them in a new light.

I’ve been quiet about this because I’ve been hoping for this ‘dry spell’(?) to end soon but I do agree. Every week I come home from 6th form and go to burdastyle, refreshing around 5:00 to see what’s new – and almost every week, even though what is created from the patterns is brill, my heart admittedly sinks. I love to see what you guys come up with patternwise and tbh if I didn’t want to buy a pattern in the first place I won’t really feel persuaded to buy it after a restyle. I’d much prefer a completely new product.
