Description

This is a dress I made with many complications and hassles. That accounts for why it took me so long and why I dragged my feet.
I decided to use a stretch material for this Drape Drape pattern (no5) but with the machine I am using it was a terrible idea. I ended up having to sew every pleat and seam with tracing paper backing, and go over every seam twice. I plan on reinforcing the waistband with my serger once I return to the States.

All in all it is a very pretty dress, it moves well (sorry most of my back shots are moving!)

I altered the pattern a little to make it less revealing, good for stretch, and easier to assemble.

blogged here with more detail!

I love the color and the pattern! very very nice! i bought this book a while ago and made the no.3 dress. unfortunately it was far to small(i took size L even i wear xs normally)-i´m a little bit irritated about the sizes. did you add some seam allowances? i would be very happy about an answer! thank you very much!!

Well thank you!! and the sizes are a bit frustrating, but you definitely do have to add seam allowances to the Japanese patterns. Sometimes I measure the pattern itself before cutting (because I don’t make muslins) to see it the numbers line up to my figure.

I wish you luck next time!

The dress looks gorgeous! I just bought the Drape Drape book yesterday. I like the alteration you made for the back. I will make the same if i attempt this. Great work!

WOW. Not only is this like 8,000 times better than the picture in the pattern, but it looks so beautiful! Perfect fabric (at least the color, if not the type!), just perfect draping and framing of the body. Stunning!

does the drape drape dress book call for mostly stretch or are they made for wovens? I just ordered the book and I’m a little nervous I wont be able to understand what fabric to use!

it recommends both. you can tell from the photos which fabric they used, but it is up to you. In the book this pattern was done in a woven, you just need a fabric that already has drape in it.

      Don’t worry! and have fun!!

great Thank youu !! in your opinion do you think no.3 is a knit or a woven? I really want to make it in a woven but i’m a little unsure! If you have made it let me know, if you haven’t and are also wondering I’ll let you know when I do the muslin!

I am pretty sure No3 is a knit in the pic, but I planned on doing it in a woven! I can’t wait to see you version

beautiful project…it looks so professionally done. I had a question about the book…is it all in japanese or would I be able to understand it? After this project, I have started looking for ways to buy the book!

It is all in japanese but the measurements are in Arabic numerals, so there is no confusion there! The patterns are very simple to follow and there is no need to read Japanese.

The diagrams are super easy to follow and all the symbolism is the same as any pattern found in English. It is funny b/c the 1st pattern book I bought I thought I’d be able to brush up my Japanese (i studied it for 4 years) but it turns out I remember very very little!
      No Japanese necessary!

This dress blew me away! Its so beautiful totally something I would wear all the time! Im working on a stretch fabric dress and I know all about it! Its so hard and fustrating, Im doing all my seams twice aswell! My mother says we need to buy a Ballpoint needle. But so far we havent gotten round to it. Fantastic perserverance and fantastic outcome! well done mate!

Thank you, I definitely should have gone for the ball point needle on this one (I used a universal) but by the time it crossed my mind I didn’t want to invest anything more into this piece, hahaha! Good luck with your projects as well, I cant wait to see your results!!

Yea I know what you mean.
I was thinking about putting mine on burdastyle but then I have only constructed it from two dresses. So I thought that wouldnt be a good idea. But I might rethink that one.

I live in NYC, and there is a Japanese bookstore a few blocks from the garment district so that is where I get al of my japanese pattern books. But I have also heard of people buying on etsy.com and different international book sites. If you google around I’m sure you’ll turn up something!
