Pleated Buttercup-ish Purse
Added Mar 15, 2013
If you do a web image search, there are hundreds made, much better than mine, but I’m new to sewing, proud of it and love the purse. I’ll definately make lots of these with scrap fabric, to go along with the outfits I sew. It has a nice wide opening, deep, but not bulky or slouchy. I even have a library book in the purse in the picure!
The purse is based off of a pattern and tutorial that is FREE! http://www.made-by-rae.com/2009/02/free-buttercup-bag-sewing-pattern. Bless Rae for this.
I added 1 1/2" to the height and an extra 5/8" all around the curved part of the purse. And I added a 2" gusset to the purse which is what makes the purse so spacious. When I made a pure Buttercup purse later, it is much smaller than my modified-Buttercup and I have a hard time fitting everything in.
The interfacing I used the first time wasn’t firm enough, so I remade it with Pellon 808 interfacing. I like the firmness now that I’m done, but it was really hard to turn the purse inside out, and it was not iron-on, so had to be sewn/quilted to the lining. Next time I’ll try to avoid turning the purse inside out and will instead do a topstich.
Sewing a curved purse was much easier than a square one I made later.
