Description

As soon as I saw this silk I fell in love with it. I got the last bit off the roll and got it for a fantastic price. I just kept on stroking it and every time I touched it I wept because of it’s beauty. I spent a long time deciding which pattern to make. I wanted something with a bow and something with few seams and when I found the Burda 10/2010 Tie-front blouse #118B here on BurdaStyle I knew it was the one.

I spent a lot of time researching how to sew with silk. I did a muslin just so I knew what was involved with the pattern, if it would fit (I ended up making a 38 – originally I was thinking 40) and if I could manage french seams on the sleeves, what type of cuff and sleeve to put on (I wanted long sleeves). I pinched my all time fav sleeves from McCalls 5179. I tried to do a continuous bound sleeve placket on them. I practiced and practiced (see the excellent tutorial I used below in the “credit section”) but on the real thing it didn’t work. The fabric just frayed into oblivion. I have small hands so I just did a bias cuff trim. It meant I lost 8 cms off the sleeve but they are still quite long. I narrowed and shorted the tie.

The fabric was the pleasure – this colour is beautiful, the silk is heavenly to touch but it was a real pain to sew – even after doing all my research on the net. I think it looks nice despite all the pain and everyone commented how nice it was. I made it for a wedding.

You’re a doll. Look at you and your couture use of organza as interfacing. That’s first class! I always learn so much from your projects. And it’s extraordinary to get to share in your special occasions, too. You look fabulous in this red! As for that tricky charmeuse, try perfect sew (the spray on version) to help with the slippery fabric (including chiffon) in future projects. My friend Hollie swears it turns the most difficult fabric into “well behaved organza” ;) Now… that wouldn’t happen to be a Veronika Maine skirt you’ve paired it with? (If it is, we’re twins, honey!)

Thanks – your comment made me feel much less incompetent (I thought maybe it was just me!) – but it was well worth the effort!

Such a beautiful color, and the blouse looks amazing! Charmeuse is a pain, but feels so glorious. I’m going to try using a bit of all natural spray starch on the seams next time I use it.

Thanks Darl! The seams weren’t too bad it was just those jolly sleeves and neckline – but I am still very happy with how it turned out. I await any of your future creations in this “medium” with great interest! xxx
