I made this dress after seeing an episode of "Mc Leod’s Daughters " where Stevie was wearing a dress with a similar neckline.
It didn’t turn out the way I hoped. There is something that I don’t like about it, but I can’t figure out what it is.
Maybe the print on the fabric is too old fashioned… I don’t know.
So please help me and post your very, very, most honest comment. So maybe then, with some changes, I can turn it into a OK dress.
Do’n’t know the name of it…

I absolutely love the fabric! if it’s old-fashioned- I am, too! I think you could make the skirt a bit more pencil shaped, perhaps it will fit better.. good luck! normally when I wear things I made myself, I like them more with time!

Lose the jeans, wear red accessories, put some leggings and heels on. The dress is absolutely fine! Put on a smile and lose the attitude young lady! You’re looking good!

I love how the top of this looks. I think the waist is fine, too, but the top doesn’t match the bottom. I think it’s as simple as adding a strip of contrast fabric to the skirt’s hem; in fact, that solid green at the top would work well. Also, I think a red or white ribbon instead of green would look nice. But overall, I love this design! The collar looks like it took some time to make.

I love the colour, and it looks great with the belt and jeans, maybe just not left loose as you are so slim its a bit baggy on you, would fit me though ;-)

I think adding some solid green at the bottom would even things out. I was looking at it for a while and the only thing i could come up with was the top overpowers the bottom… mostly the solid green line across the chest (the one under the orange strip) seemed off to me. Hope everyones comments help you find a solution so you love the dress :) … i love the fabrics by the way and the belt makes the dress more modern :)

I love it – but I think I know what olar means about the top and the bottom not quite going together – the top is so clever and has a lot of things going on up there, but the bottom is very plain.
I think the only thing that needs to be done is to add some kind of trim along the skirt hem, which would lengthen it slightly and balance out the top. Maybe add a ruffled hem – what would be great is if you had some of the striped fabric from the top left over to make the ruffle with. Also, I like the length of the sleeves as they are, I wouldn’t change them.
I also like it a lot with the belt – I don’t think it’s too strong, and it helps it look more modern.

As soon as i saw your dress on the creation gallery, i immediately clicked… that’s my answer, don’t change anything ! i don’t like empire waisted dresses and soon they will be out of date. Keep it as it is.

You could put elastic/gather it under the bust.. I think that would help… And I guess you could also put some on the sleeves to fix the length problem! The fabric is great and it’s a nice dress though!

Absolutely love it. Is there any particular thing that didn’t come out as you wanted? That color is very good for you too.

I think it’s fantastic. personally I wouldn’t make it more fitted, but that’s just because I’d be self conscious. but it’d look great on you either way! I agree with polychromatin that the sleeves look to be at a growing out phase, but you could easily push them up and tie them or just shorten them a few inches. And different colored ties would look nice. I’m totally in love with the fabric, but I’m into granny-chic and think it looks fabulous.

It is so cool and i would definetely wear it! But I think, maybe oonaballoonas idea of changing the colourt of the ties may help you be more satisfied with it…

umm, okay, i’ll help you. here’s what you do: go to the post office, put this in a box, and mail it to me. because if you change one thing about it i will be very, very sad. i think it is SO COOL. my eye was immediately drawn to it on the page of creations. love the way it shows off your straight shoulders, the placement of the stripes in the fabric are perfect, the solid green above accentuates your bust, and the simple flowy line of the bottom half suits the print perfectly. maybe, MAYBE, i would change the green ties to a gold/mustard color. but there would be much arm twisting involved.

Thanks for all the comments! I can’t make the sleeves longer because the fabric was as wide as this, if I add another piece it will look weird. I made strings at the bottom of the sleeves too, so if I pull them tighter I can pull the sleeve more up and shorten it that way. You are talking about making the waist more fitted, but I’m scared that if I do so everything will show…now I can wear a jeans underneath without showing it’s waistband…or when I’m feeling puffy ( is that a word?) it wont show in this dress. Maybe I can wear it with a belt, but won’t that distract the attention from the top? Oh, this is so difficult…. I’m afraid of making changes…….
Please keep up posting comments :D

I like the dress! But, as Olar saied, it coud be the propotions, maybe because the stripes in the sleeves accentuates the top of the dress. So… I just change the sleeves!
May 14, 2008, 06.00 AMby bijouxbetty
I like the top half, I think the others are rights, maybe make it a little more fitted around waist. For the sleeves I think they are just a little too long, they should prob be just over the elbow, llike a 3/4 sleeve. I really like the way you used the pattern of the fabric to cut under the bust. The stripes down the sleeves are great too!

The neckline is perfect I think. Maybe you add such a ribbon at the waist, because downwards the waist the whole looks a little bit boring while on the top very much is happening. It’s a little bit stiff down there. And maybe you can do anything to the bottom that would make it a little bit more lively. I think the sleeves are just at a length that one could think you’ve grown out of it: I would make them a little bit shorter. But I think it is a really great dress! How you used the fabric is great! And I don’t think it’s old fashioned.

I reckon it looks really cool, but perhaps if it was slightly more fitted to show off your waist, hips etc a little bit. The top half of the dress is really interesting and flattering. So yeah, smocking around the waist is one great idea, or keep it plain, but just make it a little more fitted.

Hi Soozy, my BF and I are here looking to the pictures for a while to see if we can tell you something, because we agree with you there is something that does not quite work but it doesn’t come easy to us!! We think the proportions may be off. We like the neckline and it is very well done but somehow the top doesn’t go with the bottom, may be the line is too high or the bottom is too fitted for the top. We also think sleeves could be too short?

I think all you need is a smile on your face :D The dress is really pretty and I think you should feel happy wearing it.

I think it´s a great fabric. The Dress looks nice. When you want to change something maybe you can leave the ribbons on the neckline / wear it open. Maybe some smocking details on the waist would be good. but it´s pretty anyway!

Hi, thanks. Weird to answer in English, knowing you are also Dutch ;) Yeah, maybe I have to leave those upper straps open, but then I’m afraid the facing may peak out… I bought it on marktplaats.nl I liked it because of the printed border but I’m also thinking it’s maybe a bit too “grandmother-like”… I am happy that I choose to use the printed border on the top instead of on the bottom what seems more logical…

It looks great, i love the fabric, where did you buy it? I can’t find anything weird.. maybe you can let the first ‘bandje" open but that’s it. Well done.
