On our last trip to NYC, last July, hooked on the TV show Project Runway, my partner and I went to Mood. Overwhelmed by the racks, bins and piles of fabric, we ended up with this beautiful plaid cotton, with the idea of making shorts for this summer.
I finally got the inspiration and time to make them, and this is what I came up with. The fabric is thick but airy and since no poly is added to it, I do not sweat whatsoever (despite the fact that I’m a hot weather loving kinda guy).
I found some great buttons and used a self drafted pattern.
The pockets are an idea from a book called “Making Trousers for Men & Women” by David Page Coffin.
The waistband was not sewn as a separate piece and Ban roll was used to stiffen it. (thank God for ban roll, it really solved all my waistband issues).
For the accents I used an olive green gabardine, and white poplin for the pocketing.
Cotton pre-folded bias tape was used on all seams
I still have to work on the flat felled seam, so any ideas are welcome.
Hope you like it and comment

ditto to tessi in her comments.. all the detail is fantastic – the pattern matching, choice of materials and design for the pockets and waistband really stand out, they’re so beautifully made and fitted.

A lot of tracing paper went to the garbage can, but it was totally worth it.

These are wonderful! You did a great job on matching the plaid. The pocket details, the back waistband notch, the side waist tabs………….everything is so well thought-out and executed. I hope you will always wear these shorts with great pride!
