Soooo I started this dress 2 years ago after winning a new sewing machine from Burdastyle. I had just finished my first formal sewing class and went all out making a full muslin and multiple versions of the pattern. Then, predictably, I ran out of steam — annoyed by my self-imposed tedium. Then I moved! So the dress went in a bag in the sewing machine box for a very long time, only to be rediscovered last night as I tore through my closet dramatically sighing, “Oh I’ve nothing to wear to the ballet!”. I finished it in about 20 minutes, so I learned a valuable lesson about not getting scared by patterns. The result is pretty good — maybe the muslin fit me 2 years ago but I still think the bodice on this was too big for me, especially in the back. I’d love to make another out of super tight silk jersey.
I should add, I left out the slit in the back of the skirt and made the front and back darts much longer to try to get it tighter. I’m petite with a short torso, and found the pattern cut straight was WAY too long on top.
Ugh. What was I thinking 2 years ago?! At the time I thought this purple-blue-brown-gold poly-wool plaid was Mad Men, but now it looks more like Ted Baxter’s leisure pants…
One 9 in invisible zipper
I did not interface the collar as recommended. I think the drape looks gorgeous.
