In Eugenia Kim’s book “Saturday Night Hats”, there’s a “haircut hat”. It’s a basic felt hat cut like a haircut. She created the design after shaving her head after a bad haircut. The same design would, I thought, make a great chemo hat for my friend in chemo. Then I saw this contest, and decided to give it a go.
The original design used a pre-made felt hood, but I just sewed a long narrow hat. I doubled the red thread in the top of the machine for drawing on the hair — it made the lines stand out better. The flower is five folded squares of a red cotton print (I followed an online kanzashi tutorial, but held the petals together with hand stitching), and finished with a vintage red flower button. It’s move-able, so she can wear the flower anywhere she chooses.
My friend who’s in chemo is also in isolation for another few days (a total of two weeks after each round of chemo), so the hat is modeled here by my daughter. I get to go see her next week, and look forward to giving her this hat.
