George Town, Cay...
Another lesson and another garment completed in the Sewing With Knits course. This time the scoop neck t-shirt.
Again my fabric shop only had a limited choice in knit fabrics, so I got this rather dubious piece of green lycra knit from the remnants bin for a few dollars. Enough for a t-shirt and a skirt so this was ideal for making my first test t-shirt. Remembering how my sewing machine ate the fabric on this Cowl Neck Knit Dress, I wasn’t too confident about using any ‘good’ material for my first try – and of course I needed to check sizing too.
The course is excellent and the t-shirt pattern is included in the course. I was supposed to add clear elastic to stabilise the shoulder seams, but couldn’t get any right away, so I went with a piece of regular white elastic for this practice piece and it did make the shoulder seams a little bulky but it still looks good when worn. I learned how to insert sleeves, and how to make and attach the neckband and got a lovely smooth finish. All my seams turned out great and all the stretching and pulling getting the t-shirt on and off hasn’t popped any of my stitches – thanks to all the tips from the course instructor. I do prefer a snug fit for my t-shirts as it feels more slimming than having them loose.
I was really pleased with this. (Although I am not delighted by the only photo I could persuade my husband to take – not very flattering.) The fabric and the color aren’t really me, so this is purely a practice piece and not a wear out garment. But now I am confident that if I can find some nice fabric I can replicate this t-shirt into something I would certainly wear. T-shirts and shorts are the go-to clothes every day here in Cayman.
A nasty dark green lycra knit from my local shop – this was just a test piece so I didn’t want to use my good fabric!
