Description

This jacket is inspired by a photo I once saw on a bathroom stall, torn from a fashion magazine, featuring a woman wearing a lovely green suit, featuring a pepulm-like flounce as a part of the jacket. I’m a huge fan of the peplum in general – who wouldn’t like a garment that accentuates your waist while hiding your hips?!

Created with the Vogue V1132 pattern, but altered to fit me (1" extension in the length at the waist); made in a lovely plaid. The plaid is very subtle and I recommend popping over to my blog to get a better look at it, as you can zoom in slightly to see the colors a bit more clearly. It is a basic gray-brown wool with threads of red, mustard, emerald and blue running through it. Different colors pop with different lights – I did not notice the blue until I was almost done with the garment! I spent quite a bit of time trying to match the plaids, which made the pattern more of an intermediate than an easy pattern. In the end, turns out that all my plaid matching should have happened at the shoulders in the back, not at the waist, but oh well, I guess you learn from each project! It was also tricky to cut out the fabric (I did cut it out single layer fashion) because I got the end of the bolt and one selvedge edge was horribly skewed because of the way it was pulled onto the bolt. I lost a good bit of fabric to that problem. I also added shoulder pads and did not bag the lining, both of which were pattern deviations.

This jacket will work great in my wardrobe from fall all the way to spring here in the PNW!

Well that’s cool. Are you going to school? Doesn’t central have a fashion program?

I actually don’t think Central has a design program, they might have a merchandizing program, but my undergrad, SPU, has a great program and I minored in design there. I’m actually just a designer on the side – I am currently in grad school, researching solar cells! Design is just a hobby of mine :)
