I used a pattern in order to get the cup size right for this dress. I used a kwik sew bra pattern just for the cup size and it fit perfectly! i had to adjust the pattern slightly because i didn’t want to have any unfinished edges on the inside or outside of the dress, and i didn’t include an under wire, instead i just sewed a double layer of bias tape where the under wire would have been. I made up the design for the rest of the dress…turns out i really, REALLY underestimated the amount of time it would take to create all the braids that i used on the dress!! I love the result though and it really does fit perfectly!
I am not sure what the material is…it was about four dollars a yard and i fell in love with it for its color and what i consider to be a somehow feminine zebra print.

For the bra cup, did you just do multiple stitch lines to get that layered look or did you actually have many seams? It reminds me of that layered look bra that Madonna made famous- the pointy one?

hah I didn’t see that connection til now! I am not completely sure what your talking about, but the bra top was made out of about 9 pieces (not including lining or bias made out of the same material). I then sewed all the braids over the top, following it’s contours.

I absolutely love this, fit and all! if i trusted myself, i’d try to recreate it for my new years trip to brazil. it would be perfect! how did you do the braids without having them fray? did you sew each individual cord and then braid them together?

thank you so much for your compliments!! and yeah, i did sew each individual cord. the braids took me almost as long as the dress itself! i cut about 24 strips of fabric, each about 3 inches wide, and then sewed them together, then made the one LONGG strip into a cord, and then divided it and made the braids! once the braid was done i also ironed it flat hoping to make it a little more edgy. you should give it a try!!

there is a great kwik sew bra pattern that i used for the cup size (pattern 2489), and from there i just drafted my own pattern of sorts. i sewed on the braids after the top was completed, and then sewed the band and the bottom of the dress to the top. i would definitely recommend the kwik sew pattern!!
