Want to create a simple skirt in a fun fabric? Then this patternless skirt project is created for you— or someone who appreciates a little bit of non-traditional pattern-making and sewing! That is, creating a skirt based on your own measurements, without a pattern. A relative gave me a pile of Marimekko fabric swatches for Christmas (thank you!) and there was just enough green & blue floral cotton to make a skirt.
I love the vintage look and feel of Marimekko cotton, the skirt has a fun retro vibe and really stands out amongst the many neutral colored garments I own. Have you ever sewn with Marimekko fabric?

Marimekko, well known for its bold patterns and organic designs, has experienced a resurgence in popularity.

If drafting without a pattern is too weird for you, be sure to check out our Basic Skirt Tutorial (left) or check out the amazing Angela Kane’s Basic Skirt free pattern download (right)!

I just tried on my ALMOST finished version of this skirt and even before I’ve finalised the last seam and zipper I HAVE to tell you – this tutorial is amazing and so simple. I followed it to a T and it worked out great. It’s the closest I’ve come to a perfect garment without too many frustrating issues along the way. I will make SEVERAL more skirts based on this basic design. THANK YOU!!!!!

HUGE fan! Alas, I’m in the same boat as susanne2011….haven’t been able to justify the splurge. Yet…

I would like to take a try at the skirt, but I can’t print the instructions. I keep trying at this end. Any suggestions?

Love love love Marimekko fabric, but it is a bit too expensive for me. I also like their kitchenware very very much, especially the black& white stuff they do. But also, very expensive. I just cannot spend 60 dollar on a single saucer or 75 dollars per meter fabric, I am a tall girl ;).

I was lucky to get the swatches from my relative. From what I remember he had requested swatches directly from Marimekko and there was enough to make a skirt!
Liberty of London, the vibrant British textiles manufacturer, did a line for Target, perhaps Marimekko will take a similar route for those who can’t afford it otherwise.

Such a wonderful fabric! I love green & blue combination. Skirt is simple but great.
