I just HAD to to make something from Pattern Magic again, something wearable and not too difficult. So I decided on the wrapped top on page 59+60 in volume 1.
I wanted the wrap a bit further down than in the book, so I put the top of the wrap-circle that is drawn on the basic pattern as a part of the contruction-process 5.5cm’s below the chest-line of my basic pattern instead of right below it. The wrap is still rather high, higher than I had expected it would be.
After working on the pattern for a while I realised that there are two methods described in the book, the first is a drape without a twist and the second is a drape with a twist (I could read half of the names of the projects in the book, guessed and later asked my japanese colleague if I was right, and I was, shiawase!).
They both have their pluses and minuses. I like that the one without the twist is cut on the bias below the waist. It also seems to fit a bit better.
The one with the twist, however, has a more even distribution of the creases in the wrap-front, and it generally just looks a bit better around the wrap.
They are both too tight around the bust, and they are both a bit too loose below the bust. I will have to adjust that before making the final version.
I think that the one without the twist may work better for thinner materials and the one with a twist better for slightly thicker materails.
I will try to evaluate them better before the final version!

I think those designs really would work with soft stretchy materials- ordered my book this week- will be experimenting too . Got a drape drape 2 book as well

I agree! I think it’s actually better suited for stretch than non stretch, in fact I’m quite sure some of the big designers have used this design for stretch…
Enjoy the book!

Very beautiful! I just bought the book and cannot wait to read (well better: view) it. I wonder if you would send me your pattern, if I cannot handel the patterns in the book? Have very successfull pattern making hours! Best regards Suzanne

Oh, great – i’ve got that book but didn’t get around to make anything from them yet, as with so many things. i can’t read japanese, but looking at the illustrations so far, they seem quite well done and easy enough to follow. – Will be interesting to see your final version, all the designs in the books look quite good in the plain white or black canvas they’re shown in, i found it hard to imagine anything else would work better. In your case though I think a softer knit might be good too, or a wool-crepes.

The one without the twist is my favourite one. I’m looking forward to see the final project.

WOW (as always), have to agree with everyone the one without a twist is the one I like best. Have these books ( 1 & 2) on a wish list but I have no knowledge of Japanese at all, so I think they should wait untill I have the attention span to do them justice as you have done!

without a twist drapes better, can’t wait to see what fabric you use.

I also like the draped version without the twist! It’s fantastic!

I prefer the draped without twist version , I find the draping is too tight on the second version

Yes, I think if I would go for that one I’d start with a much less fitted pattern. But you all seem to agree on the one without a twist :-)!
Actually, I might do that anyway, they are both too tightly draped (it’s more like knots than drapes) and I think maybe that’s the easiest way to get around it. ..

Buy it! I don’t know if it’s difficult, I think if you know how to alter patterns it’s not that difficult, and if you read japanese even easier, but if you don’t have experience of either maybe quite difficult.
I wrote a more detailed description of the pattern construction process with more pictures on my blog, check it out and you might know better: http://ancien-nouveau.blogspot.com/

I’m liking more the one without twist. If you’re worried about uneven crease distribution – it won’t be noticeable when you wear it.

Me too, I like that you all agree! With the creases, I will use something that drapes better for the final version too, so it should turn out better anyway!

I’m looking forward to see the end result! Both muslins look good, but it seems to me the one without a twist is better fitted.

Yes! I love confirmation of my own inner feeling ;-)! I’ll go for the one without a twist. I hope to make a “real” one soon!
