This is a project which serves no discernible purpose in my life, since I don’t wear it ever. Needless to say, I’m really glad I made it. It is about 40-50% hand-sewn. When I started it, my entire purpose was to make something using couture techniques because I’d gotten that one book everyone has about couture for Christmas.
So, I started applying different types of stitches, hand-felled french seams, hand-rolled hems….. I had an awesome time. After I finished, I discovered I didn’t own a single skirt puffy enough to wear this beautiful creation under. So, it sits in my closet, looking pretty. I don’t regret the few weeks that I worked on this, watching movie after movie while carefully stitching away.
On a technical note, it’s two layers made from one piece of fabric, with an elastic casing sewn in to form the layers. (If that makes any sense). The top layer has a second tier of fabric sewn to it to add length, and has vintage hem ribbon hand-sewn on. The inside layer is finished with seam binding.

that’s awesome ! I’ve seen so many skirts that are short and gathered at the waist that just don’t have that nice shape but with a crinoline like this….. hand sewing is so satisfying isn’t it? sometimes it pays to take it slow.
love your project!

It’s a very beautiful piece. What the name of the book that you received for Christmas and what type of fabric did you use to make this piece? Organza?

The book’s called “couture sewing techniques” by Claire Schaeffer (I think that’s how you spell her last name?) And yes, I used organza. Alot of it!

Thanks. Sometimes I’m skeptical about purchasing books that aren’t recommended.

make a circle skirt to wear it with! It’d be so cute.
