Description

This is pattern 107 from BWOF November 2007.
When my friend Sarah told me she was having a MadMen-themed cocktail party for her b-day, it was just the perfect excuse to sew up a party dress,
Although pretty simple in shape, the bodice has interesting lines, thanks to a center front seam and bust darts originating from the center seam as opposed to the side seams. It creates a “cross” effect that I haven’t seen often.
The skirt has wide inverted pleats and hidden pockets in the side seams.
I love that it has a retro 50’s vibe while still being quite modern.

The main design adjustements I made, aside from fitting adjustments:
-lower neckline by 1.5cm all around
-extended shoulderseams 2cm to cover a bit more of my shoulders
-added a full lining – the pattern only includes neckline and armhole facing.

I really love this dress! More photos and details on my blog

Material Notes

Silk Dupioni for the dress
bemberg for the lining
black tulle for the crinoline

Lovely dress and style… was the tule meant to be that way?

the tulle is a separate crinoline. I admit that on these photo it looks a bit wonky. But the idea is to just have a bit of it peaking out from under the skirt…

Love this dress too but I agree, the tulle either needs to be deleted or better yet I would have add more..much more.

This ‘Mad Men’ inspired dress is gorgeous and you look great in it. I really love the clothes you create as you fit and finish everything so well. This pattern has always been a favourite of mine,so I may just have to give it a go. My New Years resolution is going to be ‘use everything in the stash before buying anymore fabric’. By rights, I will be the best dressed girl in Australia if I achieve that resolution. Happy New Year and happy sewing in 2013.

Thank you so much! I say a girl should treat herself to a fancy party dress everyonce in a while, so go for it! I wish I had time to turn everything in my stash into the garment i imagine…
Happy new year to you too!
