Satin panties and bustier – BurdaStyle 01/2012 #127, #128

I am trying to reduce my towering pile(s) of vintage fabric, so that means some interesting (even unintended) results. Most of the fabrics in my stash are from the 70’s, and when I discovered this remnant of original fabric with these beautiful tribal patterns, I I thought about making this one-off two piece swimsuit, and it in fact has a wonderful retro tiki-look about it. It is comfortable, just like wearing shorts and a crop top, plus you can wear the top as a strapless bustier top if you like. There is only lining in the front and crotch of the pants, and the amount of fabric stretch in the outer material is obviously sufficient for the chosen garment size. It didn’t take long to make at all. I like how the panties give me tummy control, as in a shaping girdle; the bustier pattern conforms nicely also.

Material Notes

70’s ethnic printed cotton of medium weight and slight crosswise stretch, brown knit lining for front panel, pink stretch lace trim, zipper for left side opening, hook and eye tape for bustier

Garment Type
Beach, Vintage

I tested this two piece swimsuit while on holiday the other week. It felt wonderfully fitted and secure to swim in, with no bagging or moving out of place, or stretching out, no ballooning. The waffle-like cotton fabric actually dries at a sufficient rate in warm weather, considering its medium thickness as well as the added lining for the pants. The bottom back leg elastic stretches too easily as the elastic was not sewn taut enough in that area.
