I used McCalls 5889 (from 2009; now discontinued) to make these pants. Although I wanted to make the
version with elasticized cuffs, the pants turned out slightly too short and I did not have enough fabric to lengthen them. Gathered cuffs would have made the pants seem even shorter so I omitted them. Next time I would lengthen the legs and the rise by about 2cm each. The pattern calls for the waistband to have both elastic and a self-fabric drawstring, which seems silly. I opted for a drawstring because it allows me to pull the pants up high around my waist or let them hang lower at hip level. The pattern does not include pockets but I added simple, on-seam pockets so that I could carry a small tidbit for my camel.
Next time I set sail for the Arab world these pants will be in my trunk. With the right kurta or djellaba on top and a burnoose or shawl, they will allow me to mingle unobtrusively with the local people – inshallah!
My fabric is Mark by Liberty of London, in poplin, purchased online from Shaukat in London. It is a horrible colour but so what? It is Liberty, it was cheap and it drapes beautifully.
