Description

Normally I like a lot of ridiculous colours and patterns, but every so often I make something a bit more ‘grown up’. I bought this fabric about 6 months ago, but it stood out to me 1. because of the unusual striping, 2. because it’s very soft and cozy, and 3. because I needed more winter weight clothes.

The fabric, from Tessuti, is called Starts Out Straight – it starts with wide black stripes and narrow grey stripes, and as the grey widens and the black thins they both lose their shape. I decided the stripe with its predominant black would be best at the waist, progressing down to the misshapen grey at the bottom, and the wiggly grey for the bodice. The wide cowl uses the black striped end of the pattern repeat, and the sleeves start with the wiggly grey and head down to the straight stripes.

The pattern is self-drafted, has a slight 60/70s influence in styling, and was pretty much designed simply to show the gradation in the stripes of the fabric. It is lightly pleated in front and back, and there are also pockets in the side.
