For my first attempt a friend and I decided to visit the local thrift store and pick items to refashion for eachother…yes we are adults. :] I found an unwanted, seemingly out-dated dress, that appeared worn out from far away but upon a closer look I liked the lines of the top (minus the misshapen shoulder pads), the print of small delicate flowers, and the flowy material, then this odd sensation overwhelmed me..inspiration! I knew I had found my garment despite my friends doubts.
I went pretty easy, seeing as this is my first but wanted to make a hippie-like top to reflect my friends current style. I removed the shoulder pads with a seam ripper (that thing is awesome), cut off the lower part of the dress to begin with, then pinned the top to be slightly shorter in the front. Then after some studying of the manual I began to sew what I had pinned and took it slow at first but picked up speed, I think my machine makes things much easier. Before I knew it my friend was trying on my first project, and it didn’t look half bad!
A few days later with the skirt remaining I played with several ideas and finally decided on a short, sweet babydoll dress. This was more complicated then I had expected and required I sew the neckline and create sleeves! I wanted a slight v-neck in the front and back, the option to wear it off-shoulder, and a open sleeve. It was challenging and I’m sure not perfect, but I am so proud of the way it turned out!!! (and so is my husband)
I am starting sewing classes soon, so next time I am ready to start from scratch!

Wow! Your two garments look great! :) I never know how to go about altering a piece of existing clothing so it’s always nice to see how other people go about it.
Hope your sewing classes go well :D
