Today marks a new series of projects in which our members are given a chance to create a BurdaStyle pattern variation and tutorial to be spotlighted on our homepage! Today’s project was created by Grosgrain, and if you haven’t seen her blog, you should really check it out. Grosgrain used BurdaStyle friend Twinkle by Wenlan’s blouse pattern and truly transformed something formal into day wear. You can comment on Grosgrain’s blog to WIN this dress!
“With the collar, neck ties and skinny pencil skirt, I thought the end look was a little 1940s.” We agree that this frock is a lovely spin off of the 40s, yet the modern sleeve design and silhouette makes this dress a current hit. The bright yellow buttons, accessories and contrasting white and navy fabric lend this dress a retro look. This project translates so well in solid navy & white fabric with contrasting yellow buttons— it would be cool in a print as well.
The original Twinkle blouse featured on BurdaStyle was made in silk chiffon and crepe. Today’s project is much easier to work with in cotton = much more welcoming to beginners:
Self: 2 yards (1.8 m.), 1/2 (.45 m.) yard of piping, 11 plastic yellow buttons
Intermediate

When I click on ‘Instructions’ I get a 500 Error (Internal Server Issue)… Are there instructions for this variation?

great job, it’s such a lovely dress! i notice the yoke/bib is a bit more narrow at the shoulders here than so many of the versions users have made with the original blouse pattern. Is there an option/explanation in the pattern for this or is it just varied results of varied seamstresses? i really prefer the more narrow look but am reluctant to buy the pattern if that’s not how it actually is.

As always, Grosgrain, I love the look you put together. To Burdastyle: unfortunately, I won’t be making it – at $8.00 for the pattern – it’s a little pricey for me.

Love the dress and love the denim navy blue looks. I think I would like the dress and a cross country train ride, too. I hope the denim, the navy blue, and the dresses stay in vogue for a very long time.

I think they will— they are totally classic colors which outlast fleeting trends. You never can really pinpoint which era these classic color combos come from, yet you know they work wonders together.

Great dress! I love how different fabrics and trims can completely change a pattern. Both this one and the original are beautiful and unique.

I apologize you can’t see the images. I highly recommend to anyone who wants a better internet experience to browse in Firefox or Safari— it makes a world of difference. Good luck!
Madscouser— you’ve misunderstood me, I am not patronising you at all, I was offering a solution that has helped a lot of others be able to see images on our site. We are trying to solve this issue with our programmers while offering any more suggestions we’ve got.
