Slate blue fleece cut 1 ( 62 X 25 inch) for the shawl and 2 (11X10inch) pockets. Madeira rayon scarlet embroidery thread and white bobbin thread. Stabilizer. Embroider in large letters. This is a small project but will bring comfort to someone whose life is upended. NOTE: I just heard from Oliver who is very pleased, and, “I’m finally warm”
Use the best quality fleece you can afford. Older people have fragile skin which can be easily irritated. Light-weight is better than very heavy fleece. (Also easier to sew.) A word of caution: Use a stabilizer under the fleece. After I finished the shawl and posted this Project, I started a second. Since I hadn't used a stabilizer on #1, I didn't on #2. The embroidery threads snarled and I now have wee holes to hide. It won't be difficult, but....N

Thank you both, one item I left off, if the person is a wheelchair user, check the distance from neck to waist. Sitting for a long period of time with a bunched up piece of fabric between you and the chair can get pretty uncomfortable. For most folks, a finished width of 24 inches is good. A very short person might only need 20-22 inches. I’m sorry that was done to your husband’s grandmother. I can hear the “destroyer” saying, “I was only trying to help.” and actually meaning it.

What a great idea to personalize it! I remember my husband’s grandmother clothes had been attacked by a well meaning person with a large chisel tip permanent marker and inscribed with her last name in Large (as in 3 inch or 7.5 cm) letters on every piece of her clothing. It was sad to see her clothing ruined as the marker usually bled through to the outside of the garment (a la football jersey style only backwards.) I hope Oliver stays warm.
