This off the shoulder dress is a design made and drafted by myself, and I used the print of the fabric to my advantage. In this case, I had my fabric in hand before I decided what to make with it, so I designed this dress especially for this fabric. You can draft this dress yourself too following the steps shown in my latest Web Seminar From Sketch to Pattern: How to Transfer your Style Lines from your Fashion Sketch to your Pattern. The Web Seminar recording has several other examples of design drafts as well!
The base pattern I used for this sewing project was our Theater Dress, which is my favorite simple BurdaStyle pattern. I have made many different designs off that pattern because it is so simplistic and I know I will always get a great fit from it! But I will say, that I went down two sizes from what I normally make since the fabric I was using had stretch in it. The end result turned out great though, and fit like a glove.
I love how fabric can enhance a pattern, and I am going to be doing more of these types of projects this year (which I am excited about), using existing BurdaStyle.com patterns. I also documented my sewing process step-by-step that you can see here. Try your hand at drafting and sewing this lovely dress… The off the shoulder line is super cute as well as the A-line skirt shape (I converted the dart into fullness at the hem). This dress is going to get a lot of wear this year, I even wore it with tights and a leather jacket out in this polar vortex!
