Description

I saw this dress in Satomi’s studio, hers is called ‘gathered linen dress.’

Needless to say, I became totally engrossed with the dress. I absolutely love Japanese
design and I felt like this dress really embodied many aspects I respect about it.

The link is below is the book which I bought the book from Japan Amazon.

I made this dress from Japanese pattern book. http://books.bunka.ac.jp/np/isbn/9784579112043/

The dress in the book actually has sleeves but I preferred to leave them off as I was
using this as a summer dress.

I love this dress. Perfect for lounging on a rainy day. Love the color too! I’ll have to get this book. ;)

This is the most beautiful dress! Exactly what I’m looking for. I don’t suppose you could translate the pattern into English? I would totally buy a copy!

Do you have the book? I don’t speak Japanese!

I followed the pictures in the Japanese book to guide me.
I also used a simplicity ‘pattern for a regular shirt’ (you can use any shirt pattern that is similar to the dress) to help me with how to construct the front button hole plaquard. (I am just starting to sew
so I don’t know what goes first, how, etc….and following the English written pattern on how to make a shirt allowed me to put together the pieces easily.)

To be honest the pattern is very simple.
[I bought the book because I was dying to have a pattern book!]

You can easily make this dress by altering a regular shirt design.

What you do is take a regular shirt pattern –

STEP ONE: Keep the collar and the collar piece that attaches the collar to the dress, the front button hole plaquard thingy, and the shoulder pieces the same size as you would for a one size fits all type garment.
(I would make the shirt using a size BURDA 18 or 20) (That is about what this shirt is and you can tailor the collar size to you- you just want to make sure when making a one size fits all garment that you can get into the thing without a zipper!)

THEN, the only trick for this is that for the front and back pieces add more width to the pieces so that you can gather the tops of them at the shoulder pieces & around the front and back of the collar.

And voila! I am going to take other shirt patterns and experiment with them.

If you look at my ‘a light blue shirt dress’ the front of it looks exactly like the ‘ode to satomi’ dress. The difference is in the back where the shoulder pieces extend down the back of the shirt. You can just make the alter the shoulder piece and back piece and you can get the same effect (also you have to add width to the front and back piece to gather them up.)

      I hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips! I’ve got some beautiful linen fabric in mind, but I think I’ll experiment on some cheap stuff first in case it goes horribly wrong. I’ll let you know if I ever finish it!

This is so beautiful. I love the fabric choices in all your creations. I think I´ll go and buy some linen now:) And if you put this dress together using a Japanese pattern, you are certainly no novice. I can barely understand patterns written in English!

Thank you so much! Check out Satomi’s studio. I love all of her creations…. just clean and great pieces!

I love your work too!!!!!! Unfortunately where I live there are not many fabric choices available :-(… i am slowly becoming the linen queen.

Your so lucky to be in Brooklyn! Endless choices, endless possiblities!

Can’t wait to see more of your work!

Ah, I remember Satomi’s dress, I loved it and I love this dress too. Impressed that you managed to order it on Amazon Japan, I speak and read a little japanese, and I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to try that… well done!

Your not going to believe this but it was the quickest delivery I have ever received on the internet (I think I have bought 5 purchases on Amazon which took over a week within the United States- The book from Japan took less than 24 hours!) I had no idea if I had filled out the form properly, I was so excited to have gotten it in such a short period.

Hey thanks ladies. Ordering the book on amazon Japan was a feat in itself. Trying to figure out the parts on the pattern was like….. numbing. I had never transposed a pattern before… all those lines! I also don’t read/speak Japanese. The dress is beautiful to look at. I love it, although I think that it flatters a smaller frame (smaller bust size) because of the shear volume of fabric. I am really thinking of making another of these and a pattern with less volume. You can basically use any shirt pattern and just elongate the edges along the back and shoulders and gather them. (Did that make sense) RE: Linen! Hey Miss Carotte, I live where there is NO fabric….so awful! I can buy linen or all poly crappola…… sigh!

    Thanks Ladies! : – )

waow amazing! I feel like making one perhaps in a nice raspberry pink, calling the creation a p’Ink ode to Satomi. Once again great choice of fabric.. You are into your linen, lady!
