not-so-sure skirt (BM 1/2011)

[Disclaimer: sorry about the awful blurry pics…it was a really dark miserable day with NO natural light!!]

I’m not-so-sure about this skirt…it didn’t really work out the way i thought. I had wanted to make a tweed skirt with leather trim, but i think it might have looked better with just the waistband and part of the yoke, rather than the entire top of the skirt. If you squint it looks like a Barbie doll abdomen (you know, like a tanned plastic crotch…not really what i was going for, as you can imagine).

Pattern is from January 2011 Burdastyle magazine and i thought it would be perfect for the tweed-skirt-with-trim idea….buuuuut, i’m just not-so-sure. I’m also not-so-sure about the godet pleat in the back instead of a split. I don’t hate it…i’m just not-so-sure i like it.

I do love the fabric though!!

Material Notes

tweed and faux leather (pleather..lol)

I think the fit is perfect and the fabrics are really nice together. I love the effect of the leather yoke, didn’t think of Barbie a second!

I think this skirt looks great, you’ve managed to update a rather old-fashioned design and made it quite edgy in the process! I’ve been looking for ways to incorporate leather into clothing, so, thanks for the inspiration!

Your notations very cute-but, project a success. I love yokes-front or back, and really think they are flattering. You are “ranging outside the box” which is what designers do-you know, the genius who took a chance! Like it a lot! Just returned from Nashville, TN area-you see bits of leather on everything there!

Thanks! i love yokes too they add a nice structured-y feel to things.

Nashville? O im jealous..i’d love to visit there. I’m a huge country music fan and get teased about it constantly by all my “cooler” friends!

I think this’d go quickly on etsy or the like; it’s so unusual. I have to agree with the others below that if you don’t like it then you shouldn’t feel the need to wear it, but someone out there might be looking for exactly this. Though there’d be a lot of pilates between me and being able to get in that skirt, it definitely caught my eye ;) Love your work!

I love your work… usually… but have to agree- this skirt is a bit of a disaster. I see your idea with tweed and leather- but this design is simply wrong for that combination. I also had an experience with a similar skirt pattern and it made me look 5mnth pregnant. Only for those skinnies, with nothing below the waist P.S.: trust your gut. Don’t like it- give it to charity- who knows, you might see it somewhere parading as vintage skirt )))))

I think it’s on-trend in a unique way and that you can rock it! If you’re feeling unsure about the leather bit, maybe try a linked metal belt you can wrap around your hips to break up the expanse of leather??

I think your skirt is great! your description of Barbie made me laugh, but I definitely did not think that :-) I would wear this!

You’re not so sure, but I think the idea of leather and tweed looks great! And I think it is not too much. It is a ‘special’ effect! Maybe I would adjust the lenght of the skirt, just abow the knee.
