My husband noted that I have never made a black dress…most of my me-made dresses are bright colors or crazy prints. So I set out to make a black dress with my first Vogue pattern, 1042. Let’s just say that there’s a good reason why Vogue patterns have a reputation for being trickier. The bodice was an epic fail the first time I made it up, but a friend convinced me to go back and try again. I reworked a lot of the pieces and while it’s not perfect, it’s acceptable. I added a big poofy tulle skirt in an effort to distract from the bodice’s issues. It’s not quite a LBD anymore, but I’m glad I saved it from the UFO pile.
More pictures and details here.
Poly black plush fabric (not quite velvet or suede…not sure what it is; I bought it years ago) for the bodice, tulle and lining for the skirt.

I’m glad you went back to it. It looks great! Most people don’t see the “flaws” we see in our own creations.

Now this is my kind of LBD! I think you did an awesome job. I love Vogue patterns but I often ignore the instructions because some of them take very long and time consuming steps that I don’t think add to the end result. I know my first few were disasters though so good on your for keeping up with it. The end result is fabulous!

I really like your LBD and I am glad you have persevered with the Vogue pattern. Every now and again I will buy a Vogue pattern and most times I ask myself why??? Fitting often cannot happen until you have almost completed the garment and if it isn’t right, it means lots of unpicking-so frustrating as we all don’t have a Vogue figure. But I think you have made a beautiful dress that you will be very pleased that you have in your wardrobe. Well done.
